Matthew Pearce says...

This series of paintings are inspired by my love of the Dorset coast and the colours and shapes that it forms.

From paddle boarding along Studland Bay and Weymouth Bay to walking the coastal paths across to Man O’ War Cove, Durdle Door and along Chesil beach, I’ve gathered a vast amount of information that has inspired these paintings.

In particular the Dragons Teeth and the back drop to Chesil beach and the West Fleet Lagoon.

The Dragons Teeth are concrete cube shaped obstacles that were placed on Chesil beach to hinder the movement of German tanks attempting to land on the beaches during world war 11.
Over time these reinforced concrete blocks have become part of the landscape and have been moved and weathered by the waves and storms over time.

From inspiration gained from collecting washed up items and taking photographs along this coastline I have created a series of paintings that encapsulate this for the viewer in a contemporary abstract form.

Jane Dean says ...

Everything I paint is a response to specific landscapes. I make expressive drawings - often in charcoal or ink - and I make abstract drawings which are collections of marks representing the shapes and textures of a particular place at a particular time. I might keep these sketches as they are, or tear them up and reconfigure them as collage as a useful exercise in composition. These drawings provide jumping-off points for my paintings and stimulus for further exploration.
