Dorset Paintings: Nicky Moeran

I am a self-taught artist working in oil, watercolour and charcoal. My subjects are mainly landscapes, seascapes and still lifes painted from direct observation. I have been lucky enough to win several awards.
I work outdoors and in my studio, and mostly favour a muted palette, because for me it is the subtler, quieter tones that offer the most interesting ways to explore and capture the shifting balance between light, shade and mood. Sometimes a painting can feel 'finished' after just one session, but more often I 'build' my way to the final composition, applying numerous layers of different tones until they properly reflect what I am trying to achieve. The rolling hills and wild coastline of West Dorset are a particular inspiration.
My work has been exhibited in London, Oxford and Dorset and my paintings are in collections in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia. I am a member of the Bridport Art Society and the Oxford Art Society. You can see more work at:
